Points of Pride
UAF was designated a Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution (NASNTI) and an Alaska Native and Hawaiian Native-Serving Institution (ANNH) with 23% of students being Alaska Native. It houses the nation’s only College of Indigenous Studies that offers academic programs designed to serve Indigenous communities and build new generations of leaders.
Being at the forefront of climate and Arctic research, UAF created the Climate Scholars Program (housed within the Honors College) which is the first of its kind in Alaska and the U.S. The program offers undergraduate students experiential learning opportunities focused on climate change, many of which take place outside of the traditional classroom.
UAF is home to several unique features, including the world’s only university-owned rocket launch site, called Poker Flat, its own herd of muskoxen and reindeer, and the iconic Bus 142 from the Into the Wild story.
